Hi!
Welcome to our new website as well as our blog.North Carolina Water For People Committee is very excited to have all these cool tools to reach more people like you and talk about our exciting activities to all members and non-members out there.
Our committee has a long history in our region, going back to the early 90s.We have been mainly involved in the water and sanitation projects in Bolivia but lately we have expanded our worktrip areas to Malawi and El Salvador as well. Our members have been mostly from water/wastewater industry. But guess what ?? We have expanded that as well and we are proud of our new members from the area universities and the State Regulatory offices.
We have been a very active committee with lots of good ideas on fundraising and with World WaterCorps trips to Bolivia, El Salvador and Malawi.With this blog, we are hoping to share our progress with the upcoming events, our ideas with others,and to provide updates on the worktrips and projects.
Let me start with our activities! For starters, we have NC Annual Conference coming up. We have great items to raffle as well as country specific items to sell at a silent auction during the conference. Our Fundraising Subcommittee worked hard to get the items donated which will be raffled. Silent auction items were donated by our members who have gone on trips and brought back country specific items.
We just had our 13th Annual Golf Tournament in September. It was a great day to be out on the course and swinging that club! We had a very successful event thanks to our Golf Tournament Subcommittee and other volunteers who were taking pictures, registering participants, running around..well.. driving around on the golf carts making sure everybody was having a nice day!
These two events I mentioned above used to be our only fundraising events. Not anymore! We are trying to roll out new activities! We have been trying to find ways to spread the word and reach to the people outside of our industry. Nick (Dierkes) has suggested a Geocaching event in Charlotte and Raleigh downtown. Nick and Mike (Orbon) have been working on that event and you might hear in Spring how it went when we post the results.
We were also inspired by all the 5Ks going on in Charlotte downtown and decided to run with a Fun Run idea! Ilke (McAliley), Jana (Stewart), Jackie (Jarrell), Tricia (Drummey), Abhishek (Yadav), and Tracy (Chouinard) have dirtied their hands in their first-ever run planning. Not all of them are runners, but let me tell you, they can plan a mean run!! If everything goes through, we are hoping for May 8th for the Fun Run.
For this year, we also had a great chance in volunteering for Charlotte Thunder Marathon. The event planner needed volunteers and we need to raise funds! No brainer! So we promised to provide 25 volunteers for the finish line on December 12th and they will donate $1,000 to Water For People. As you see, we are doing anything and everything not to actually have to run ourselves but we are here to help with all the coordination! Hey, somebody has to run and somebody has to give out the water ! Am I right? :)
Well,as you see, it is going to be a busy year! We will update our blog weekly on all these events and also will talk about our trips, what we have learned, what impact they had ...on the beneficiaries and on us as well.
